Campus of Justice, Madrid
Competition Honourable Mention
In partnership with OPR and RoomZ
Client: Campus de la Justicia de Madrid, Sociedad Anónima
The goal of the ideas competition was to group together local and regional courts in Madrid in one location.
The competition in two stages was open to architects from all over the world, who were invited to put forward schemes for a new campus of justice. Calling it a campus was no accident as the organisers were inspired by the Anglo-Saxon university model, with separate but connected buildings set in a large urban park, the Parque de Valdebebas, on the northern outskirts of the city.
We opted to accentuate the linear character of the site by placing a large central park of 700 meters by 50 meters in the centre and, around it, a three-storey ring to house the circulation of the public, employees and other stakeholders.
Above this ring we located the buildings for the courtrooms, common services and offices emerging as crystalline prisms.
In the basement a circulation loop is proposed to allow rapid communication between the buildings and facilitate the integration of services and maintenance.
